As part of a commercial refit for the Royal Derby Children’s Hospital I produced a series of large scale illustrative murals that are installed throughout various areas of the young outpatients department. The themes and initial ideas for each area were generated initially through frequent meetings and workshops between myself, staff and children from the hospital. The overall themes of “adventure and nature” were selected, to provide a basis for engaging conversations and to give a sense of inspiration for visiting families. I implemented a palette of colours through a flat style to accommodate new furniture, seating, flooring, ceiling and decorative vinyl, and to ensure that each area is distinguishable. It was fantastic to be invited for the reopening of the hospital, and to see parents and children engaging with the imagery, pointing out characters (and taking selfies with them) , and counting sets of eyes in the bushes of each mural!
